The first being her aunt, Sanjana Kapoor, daughter of actor Shashi Kapoor, followed by her sister, Kareena.Karisma studied in the Cathedral and John Cannon School in Bombay until the sixth standard. The Kapoor family, who have all been major actors in their own rights, including great-grandfather, Prithviraj; grandfather, Raj; Uncles, Shammi and Shashi; aunt Jennifer; Paternal uncles, Rishi & Rajiv; Rishi's wife, Neetu Singh; Shashi's sons Kunal and Karan.Born to one of the most illustrious family of Bollywood one thought Karishma Kapoor, daughter of Babita and Randhir Kapoor, had a silver spoon to her privilege and all doors would open to her automatically.Only Karishma and her fans know what it took for her to reach where she is today. Hardwork, patience, pitfalls, perseverance, she has seen and gone through them all.Karishma's career started with prancing along seashores and trees to mundane numbers opposite a small-time hero. Under the guidance of mother Babita, an actress of consequence herself, Karishma improved on her acting, dialogue delivery and dance skills, catapulting herself into a league where she could work in better films. Exploitative that the film industry is, Lolo, as she is fondly addressed, wasn't spared from taking the brunt. There were vulgar dance numbers, revealing clothes and the rest of the publicity gimmicks that Karishma did which probably otherwise she would not have looked at. She was ambitious and wanted to prove to the world of her capabilities, so she waited with patience. She made her film debut with Prem Qaidi (1991) opposite Harish. Her next big hit was Anari (1993) and during this time she made news with a fight with her Andaz Apna Apna (1994) co-star, actress Raveena Tandon. She had a series of hit comedies between 1994 and 1997 starting with Raja Babu (1994) and ending with Hero No.1 (1997) with Govinda and director David Dhawan. She hit the big time with the super success of Raja Hindustani (1996) and further consolidated her career with Dil To Pagal Hai (1997). In Fiza (2000), she surprised many with an excellent performance showing great emotional range and depth. She has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress 1996 for her role as Arthi in Raja Hindustani (1996). Karishma has won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) as also the Filmfare and Zee award in the same category. She was offered Rani Mukherjee's role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Karisma does not like to talk about her personal life but she has been romantically involved with Ajay Devgan and Abhishek Bachchan. She announced her engagement to Bachchan in October of 2002 on the 60th birthday of Abhishek's father, Amitabh Bachchan. Four months later in February 2003, they split up.On 29 September 2003, she married industrialist Sanjay Kapur, CEO of Sixt India. In typical Kapoor tradition, Karisma was married at her grandfather, the late Raj Kapoor's home, R K Cottage. The couple opted for an hour-long Sikh ceremony. The couple has one daughter named Samaira, who was born on 11 March 2005. After the birth of her daughter, there was considerable rift between her and her husband. The couple has subsequently patched-up.
